Smart trainers, winter clothing and wet weather tyres

Merlin is back with another brilliant takeover.

There are some smashing deals in here that will help you get ready for winter riding. If you're keen on heading out in the depths of winter then you'll definitely want to have a look at the Castelli Omloop Thermal bibshorts, the ever-grippy Continental GP 4 Season tyres that are fabulous for wet weather, and the whacky, but very effective Assos Shell S7 gloves.

Argon 18 E-117 Tri+ Frameset

It might be the end of the TT and Triathlon season, but that means that it's the perfect time to kit yourself out with a brand new bike.

Building up from the frameset will allow you to create the perfect bike for the type of events that you'll be doing, be that flat fast courses, or Hard Rider events with more elevation. The E-117 comes with brakes integrated into the frame and forks, making this a super slippery design.

The 3D headset design means that the front end is hugely customisable, with three headtube heights for each frame size. That sounds like endless fun over the winter tinkering with your position and getting it dialled before the season starts again in the new year.

Continental Grand Prix 4 Season

Continental GP 4 Season Tyre

Going out in the winter is hard enough with the extra clothing you have to wear. The last thing you want when you finally get out is a puncture or a lack of grip on cold, wet roads.

Continental's GP 4 Season provides a great mix of puncture protection and wet weather grip. This is probably Continental's best tyre for the winter and the one that we see on so many winter bikes in the UK. Their popularity is due to that grip which is crucial when the roads stay wet for 4 long months! The tyres aren't even that slow. They seem to wizz along easily.

The casing is supple enough to give good comfort over rougher surfaces which seem to be a feature of pretty much all of the local B roads around here.

Shimano Dura-Ace 9000 Brake Calipers

If you're looking to refresh your bikes then the last series of Dura-Ace offers a very good price-saving with impressive braking power.

The latest Dura-Ace rim brakes are a really fabulous set of callipers. They are light throughout the lever stroke, allowing you to generate power easily. Brakes are also one of the easiest components to swap out, you'll usually just need a 5mm Allen key and a dab of grease.

Castelli Omloop Thermal Bibshorts

Castelli Omloop Thermal Bib Shorts
£69.00

After the warmth of the summer, we're quickly noticing that bib shorts aren't enough for cool mornings. They might be slightly overkill right now, but give it a few weeks and you'll be very pleased that you bought these at a great price!

We love this pair of bib shorts. They're longer than normal bibs, for extra coverage towards the knee, which is ideal when the weather is cool but the tempo is high. The bibs get Castelli's Progetto X2 Air seat pad for long-distance comfort and a raw-cut edge at the knee to prevent any discomfort.

You can still use them in the depths of winter. We've had great results pairing these bibs with Castelli NanoFlex leg warmers.

Assos Shell S7 Cycling Gloves

Assos Shell S7 Cycling Gloves
£29.95

This slightly odd-looking pair of gloves might not be about to win any style awards but functionally, they're brilliant.

The S7 gloves are constructed using a neoprene material that is windproof and water-resistant. They can be worn alone, or layered over another set of gloves for the ultimate deep-winter protection on cold and wet days.

Vittoria Rubino Pro Control G+

Vittoria Rubino Pro G+
£19.99
Commerce content is independent of editorial, and Farrelly Atkinson earns commission from promoted products

Winter isn't the time to be spending huge money on tyres. So if you're looking to save money on tyres then these are a great option.

The rough roads and increased debris can ruin a set of tyres in just a few months so getting a cheaper set is sensible. Vittoria's Rubino Pro still offers good grip in wet weather and decent rolling speeds too. That makes them perfect for a long winter of club runs and training sessions before the fancy tyres come back out in spring.

The 25mm width allows you to run slightly lower pressures for more grip and comfort.

Tacx T2780 Bushido Smart Trainer

Tacx T2780 Bushido Smart Trainer
£275.00

This smart turbo is a great way to get into virtual riding. The trainer can be controlled by apps like Zwift and Trainer Road to make turbo riding more realistic.

If you're time-crunched during the week then the turbo is a great way to pack in some training. But just sitting on a turbo is really dull. So getting a smart trainer is the best way to make things more interesting.

This Tacx Bushido has a max resistance of 1400 watts, plenty for big sprint efforts. You'll need an ANT+ dongle to get training properly but these are pretty cheap.
