The Mega Week Roundup: Carbon Wheels, Bike Boxes & More
Friday, April 27, 2018 - 11:30
After a glorious week in Italy, we're back with a bang!
It's been a pretty disappointing change in the weather but with the Giro just around the corner, we're itching to get out on the bike.
The pros are moving towards the Grand Tours so Bikecation wants to show us some amazing locations for riding.
Along with that we've got some great starter bike deals and a load other other great kit!
Prime RR-28 Carbon Wheels + FREE Continental GP4000s II Tyres & Tubes
Commerce content is independent of editorial, and Farrelly Atkinson earns commission from promoted products
This is a brilliant bundle with inner tubes included as well!
If you've been looking at some carbon wheels for the summer, this is the best deal we've seen this year on carbon clinchers.
We love the rim profile. The wider rim will match the FREE Continental GP4000s II 25mm tyres perfectly, giving you great cornering grip.
The 28mm rim depth offers a little aero advantage over normal rims, but these won't be grabbed by strong crosswinds in the same way that deeper rims can be.
The shallow rim section also makes this a very light wheel at only 1414g. That's brilliant considering the lightweight price tag.
The wheels themselves are currently 25% off and the deal that includes the free tyres won't be around for long!
Vittoria Corsa G+ Clincher Tyre
We've just spotted this great deal today.
The Corsa is probably our favourite clincher tyre on the market. The casing is super supple and the tread gives great grip while rolling quickly.
The tan walls look awesome, especially on deep carbon rims!
dhb Aeron Carbon Road Shoes 2018
Comfy, stiff and stylish with an unbeatable price.
These dhb shoes feature a stiff carbon sole with a synthetic upper and ratchet closure system.
dhb have kept costs down by using a very simple design. That means opting for a ratchet closure system over the more modern BOA dials.
We've found that ratchets will still offer an adjustable fit whilst firmly securing the foot into the shoe.
The synthetic upper has perforations for cooling and the wipe clean surface makes cleaning these a breeze.
There is also venting built into the sole which helps to eliminate hot spots under the foot.
B&W Bike Box II
This is another deal that we've just spotted.
B&W is one of our favourite bike box companies, they've kept our bikes safe on trips to the Alps, Canada and Mallorca.
That's quite a lot of flying but they stand the test of time with good locks and robust wheels.
This one is really simple to pack up and it'll take your extra kit as well.
Scicon AeroTech Evolution X TSA Bike Box
There's a free 110L Trolly Bag worth £225 with every box!
The AeroTech Evo 3.0 is a seriously easy box to pack up with dedicated wheel storage and minimal disassembly required.
The Thermoplastic ABS shell prevents a carbon frame from being damaged with the internal straps and padding also helping to keep everything in place.
The hard case doesn't amount to too much weight though and at 12kg, this should easily clear most baggage allowances, allowing you to pack some cycling kit in the box too.
This deal also includes a FREE 110L Scicon Trolly bag. This will take care of the rest of your kit and clothing. It's possibly the most organised bag we've ever seen!
Internally, there are specific compartments for your helmet, shoes and even sunnies.
Merlin Cordite Ultegra 6870 Di2 Ltd Edition
Prices start at £1,099 for a bike that's built to go fast.
There is a range of groupset options available with our eyes drawn to the Ultegra 6870 option at 40% off.
If this is going to be your first serious bike, then we'd recommend the 105 option. It's the cheapest in the range but 105 looses barely anything to Ultegra in terms of tangible performance.
In fact, as well as being perfectly crisp and accurate, the shifting has also shown itself to be pretty robust, surviving a full UK winter with no issues.
The Di2 edition would really tempt us for the extra cash. This 6870 groupset is perfect with accurate shifting and powerful braking.
The offer of free pedals and shoes makes this an ideal starter pack with the Shimano RP9 shoes providing a great fit and enough stiffness for the biggest riders.
Shimano Ultegra R8000 50/34 11/32 Groupset
The latest Shimano Ultegra groupset is already heavily discounted.
This deal also lets you choose your preferred crank length.
Last week we were in Italy for road.cc Italy Week and while we were there we got to ride this groupset in the Italian hills.
The 50/34 11/32 gearing that came on our DeRosa Idol bikes was spot on for that type of riding and we never felt over geared.
The shifting is crisp and accurate, even under heavy load and the braking is really powerful.
The shifter ergonomics have been tweaked slightly from the 6800 edition and we found them to be really comfy on long days and slightly easier to reach from the drops.
Cycliq Fly12 CE Camera + Light
We went to Rimini last week for road.cc Italy Week (did we mention?) and our on-bike filming was done using one of these beauties.
The camera is super simple to operate with 1 button to begin and finish recording. There was also enough charge to shoot a few descents on consecutive days.
The 1080p at 60fps offers brilliant video quality in both bright sunlight and also while using the 600 lumen light.
Mounting the camera was also really simple. It fitted onto the underside of the K-Edge mount we had really easily and it's simple to mount it to the bars too.
This Fly 12 is an update on the older model with this newer model providing better video and light output. The Fly 12 will record in a loop, making it perfect for commuters. A good memory card is needed for a camera like this, so we'd recommend a big 64gb card.
Cycliq also produce their own out-front dual mount for this camera. It's a solid design for use with a quarter turn computer on top.
Altura Podium Night Vision Waterproof Jacket
This jacket provides performance well above its price tag.
We love Atura's Podium kit range. It always scores well in road.cc tests, providing great performance at sensible prices.
The cut on this jacket is very good. The raised front section prevents too much material bunching when you ride in a more aggressive position.
The cut isn't too race-orientated though, making this ideal for the majority of riders on normal bikes.
The Altura Sheild technology makes this jacket waterproof and windproof whilst maintaining breathability.
As the jacket is only a shell, it is the ideal jacket for layering. The thin construction also means that this will pack away into a jersey pocket or rucksack if the weather looks threatening.
Amazing Alpine Bikeaction Deals!
With the Grand Tours approaching, Bikecation think it's about time we all headed off to the Alps!
The Swiss Alps offer some of the most stunning natural beauty the world can offer.
The area around Interlaken offers a great mix of brutal climbs and easier lakeside rides. The town itself is bustling throughout the year and has beautiful architecture for days off the bike.
The town is surrounded by climbs with the Furka, Grimselpass and Sustenpass being within riding distance. Those big climbs are stunning, but it's the perfection of the smaller roads that we love.
The Swiss really know how to take care of their roads!
The Swiss Alps with Bikecation
If you're a true mountain goat, then you'll love Bormio. The climbing is all around with pretty much everything being a challenging cat 1 or HC climb.
This will make for some truly epic rides with incredible hairpins that are a saviour going up and a load of fun going down.
The area also features a whole host of gravel roads and trails, making it ideal for walking and XC MTB too.
We'll be sticking to the tarmac though, as the climbs of the Stelvio, the Gavia and the Mortirolo are all nearby.
The Italian Alps with Bikecation
The French Alps forms the heart of the Tour and has seen many rivalries settled over the years.
It's a place that we absolutely love to ride our bikes and it's provided us with some of our toughest ever tests.
The roads here are numerous and pretty challenging, but many riders amaze themselves with their ability to complete the climbs, although we probably won't be challenging Pantani's times.
From Morzine, you are able to ride the Col de Joux Plane, Col de la Ramaz, Col de la Joux Verte, Col de la Colombiere, La Forclaz, Col de Corbier and Col de la Jambaz. If that isn't enough, then Alp d'Huez, Galibier, Glandon and Croix de Fer are within a day trip in a car.
The Northern French Alps with Bikecation
Focus Cayo Tiagra Road Bike
This Focus offers great value from a great frame and solid groupset.
At just under £800, this would make the ideal first serious road bike. The frame is ideal for future upgrades if you fancy splashing more cash.
The frames are a full carbon construction with a full carbon fork offering road buzz-killing comfort.
The Shimano Tiagra used to be a massive compromise, but since Shimano updated it, it's become a really great option for budget bikes.
The aesthetics are very similar to the more expensive groupsets and you only really lose out on the weight and 1 sprocket at the cassette.
The wheels and tyres are great value for money with the Concept SL wheels offering a solid platform for the Schwalbe Laguno tyres in 25mm.
Sidi Dragon 4 Mega MTB Shoes
These high-performance MTB shoes are ideal for XC riding.
The shoes feature a carbon sole and Sidi's own dial closure system.
Sidi MTB shoes are massively popular among XC, CX and gravel riders. The shoes are light and comfortable giving great performance all day.
The shoes get plenty of breathability from the mesh sections in the upper, making these shoes perfect for spring and summer rides.
As with all high-end Sidi shoes, the main wear points on the sole are replaceable, giving these shoes a much longer lifespan than other performance shoes.
Mavic Crossmax Pro Carbon Wheelset 27.5
These carbon beauties are the perfect upgrade for a race bike.
The full carbon rim means increased lateral stiffness which then leads to more accurate handling and better power transfer.
The wider rim supports the sidewall at lower pressures, meaning that you can get more grip while maintaining good rolling speed.
The rims are laced in a 2 cross pattern on both the front and rear wheel. This gives great strength to the wheel, especially under heavy breaking load.
The wheels are really light at only 1470g in this 27.5" size.
In the box, you don't just get wheels, there is also tubeless rim tape, sealant, axle adapters and bolts for the disc rotors.
Shimano XT 1X11 Drivetrain Groupset
Got great braking but sloppy shifting? This drivetrain upgrade can transform a bike!
The XT drivetrain groupset offers everything you need to completely overhaul your shifting.
When you're out riding, the last thing you want is mechanical problems. Most drivetrain issues won't stop you rolling, but they make it a pain to ride uphill and they're just plain annoying.
This 1X groupset takes away 1 of the common problem areas, the front mech.
The large cassette takes away any issues with gear range, this 11-42 provides everything we need with a 32T non-drop chainring up front.
Apple iPhone X Unlocked Smartphone
The latest iPhone at a much friendlier price.
If you're after the latest iPhone then there are some great deals to be found by choosing a refurbished unit.
There's a whole range of reasons for a phone this new to be refurbished but once they leave MusicMagpie, they've been restored and checked.
We're no strangers to refurbished Apple products. Our MacBook Pro is from 2012 which has never missed a beat!
The new iPhone X does away with a physical home button, resulting in a large display.
If you're shooting video, you'll get 4K at 60fps with optical image stabilisation. This gives a cinematic feel to your videos with no visible judder.
The camera now features a portrait mode for creating the ultimate selfie with the front-facing camera also shooting at 1080p.
AfterShokz Trekz Titanium Bone Conduction Bluetooth Sports Headphones
These headphones are perfect for listening to tunes while running or cycling.
The headphones don't block your normal hearing, making them safe to use in traffic.
AfterShokz Trekz are the ideal solution if you want to listen to music when you're on the bike, but also want to hear any cars approaching you from behind.
Riding with headphones is not uncommon, but it's not the safest thing to do when riding.
The bone conducting headphones send small vibrations through the cheekbone which then transfers into the inner ear. This leaves you able to hear normally.
These headphones are also cable-free, which is perfect if you're working out in the gym.
The deals listed on this page are the best deals on the best cycling products we can find.
