The Mega Roundup - Turbos, Power Meters, Clothing, Bikes & More
Monday, August 6, 2018 - 10:28
A huge roundup this week featuring CycleSurgery's massive takeover!
There has been a load of great sales to kick off August. We've spotted some great deals on components, bikes, clothing and turbos.
Campagnolo Bora Ultra 50 Carbon Clincher
Commerce content is independent of editorial, and Farrelly Atkinson earns commission from promoted products
These beautiful hoops are down to a decent price
If you're looking for high-performance carbon clinchers, Bora Ultras are some of the best.
Campagnolo still make these wheels with their fabulous cup and cone bearings.
That makes them easily serviceable with basic tools and we think that they spin beautifully.
The rim is super stiff carbon fibre measuring 50mm deep and 24.2mm wide. This supports a 25mm tyre perfectly.
The rim bed has no spoke holes meaning that you don't need rim tape. This reduces rotational weight and makes these spin up to speed effortlessly.
Braking has been improved by using grooves in the brake track. This clears water very effectively, vastly improving wet weather braking.
4iiii Precision 2.0 6800 Power Meter
Save £189.01 of this reliable and accurate power meter.
We've been using one of these for racing this season. It's been flawless in all weathers.
The 4iiii Precision is one of the left crank power meters that have pushed the prices down on these excellent bits of tech.
Taking power reading from only the left crank reduces the cost and weight of the unit with drawbacks only being found if you heavily favour one leg.
The precision even takes that issue away with a programmable offset value. That makes this system very accurate.
We've been seriously impressed with the weatherproofing. This has done rain, heat and even snow without even a hint of an issue.
There is an extra £78.75 off at the checkout!
Campagnolo Super Record Ti Groupset
This beautiful groupset is perfect for any Italian bike.
While we really love Di2, it seems wrong to put it on a Colnago, De Rosa or Wilier, due to the Italian heritage of those bikes.
For them, there is only Campagnolo. At the top of the Italian groupset collection is the Super Record range.
Like Shimano's Dura-Ace, there are mechanical and electronic versions of this groupset, with this one being the former.
We really love the hood ergonomics on the shifters, which are really comfortable when climbing.
The amount of carbon fibre on display makes this a very eye-catching groupset but there are more weight saving measures hidden away.
Both carbon and aluminium options are 28% off!
SwissStop Flash Pro Carbon Pads
If you're looking to improve your breaking, these pads will give you the stopping power you need.
As a diehard cantilever user on the cyclocross bike, braking power is a hot topic in cold and rain conditions.
That meant our hands weren't struggling to generate the power and confidence was increased on more technical courses.
The pads seem to offer increased modulation and stopping power. We made the switch to using SwissStop pads halfway through last season and the difference was really noticeable.
SwissStop Flash Pro Aluminium Pads
The pads also ran cleaner than stock pads, leaving the beautiful Dugast tubular sidewalls clean and fresh.
It may seem like a lot to spend over stock pads, but for us, the investment is well worth it!
Evans have a great little treasure trove in their ex-demo section. There are Garmins, GoPros and load of components too!
After having a look through, we've picked out some of the highlights.
Oakley Radar EV Ex Display
Oakley's Radar EV sunglasses are seriously popular among the professionals.
They're secure on the face, look good and give a clear view. This pair gets the Ruby Prizm lenses for great optics on the road.
Shimano Ultegra Di2 Shifters & Flat Mount Callipers
If you're building up a new road bike, or just fancy a little upgrade, this is a brilliant price for Di2 shifters and brakes.
The system is perfect for road, cx and gravel. In fact, we've found that the performance just gets better as the conditions get worse!
GoPro Hero 5 Session Ex Display
If you're looking to record some of your rides or races, the session is a great little unit.
It shoots 4K and is fully waterproof. What's more, it's very simple to attach this to the underside of an out-front Garmin mount.
Garmin Edge 25 Ex Display
A small bike computer used to give you very basic speed and distance data, with GPS only on expensive models.
This Edge 25 does GPS and all the basics while also allowing you to connect up heartrate and cadence sensors via ANT+!
They've got a whopping 30% off selected road bikes and a few other great deals too.
Cannondale Synapse Carbon Disc Ultegra 2018
Cannondale's Synapse is a bike that feels like it was designed for UK roads. In fact, we're not surprised that this bike is so popular with UK riders.
The geometry is perfect for most recreational riders, with the tall headtube meaning you don't have to run a bunch of spacers under the stem, improving the handling of the bike.
The Ultegra shifting and braking is pretty much perfection in our eyes. Dura-Ace might be lighter, but it costs more, making replacements more of a financial headache!
Giant TCR Advanced Pro 2 2018
When the TCR was first launched, it was Giant's only race bike. Now that they have the Propel for the fast stuff, the TCR can be focused more towards climbing and handling like a dream.
Many amateur racers will choose this bike as their race bike because of the handling, stiffness and great value that Giants offer.
This one, with it's 11-speed 105 and tubeless carbon wheels as standard will make an amazing first serious road race bike.
Giant Defy Advanced 3 2018
Like the above Synapse, the Defy range is aimed at long days in the saddle.
Throw this at a mammoth sportive or Sunday ride and you'll be a lot fresher at the finish.
The frame gives you a stiff platform, while also boasting space for wide tyres along with hydraulic callipers.
Cannondale SuperSix Evo Carbon Dura Ace
A full-blooded race bike that has seen subtle changes since we first saw the SuperSix.
We actually own the 2014 version and we're not in a hurry to move on. The SuperSix offers a lightweight frameset that handles beautifully.
This one has a brilliant spec sheet with a Dura-Ace groupset, Cannondale HollowGram crankset with SpiderRing chainrings and a set of Cannondale HollowGram carbon wheels.
But that's not all, Cycle Surgery also have some other great sales on too!
If you're after some new clothing to go with your new bike, Cycle Store have some cracking deals on Castelli, Gore, Endura, Altura and loads more.
And last but not least, they've got a whole load of components on sale. There are 17 pages of tyres, saddles, pedals and lights to browse through!
Remember, CycleStore will be back next week at the same time for another great sale!
They've got a range of Tarmac SL models from 2017 and 2018 from £1,200 to £4,000.
Specialized Tarmac SL Sale
The Specialized Tarmac is one of the longer running ranges of bikes and is designed for the climbers.
That said, it was, for a long time, the race bike that was used by the sprinters too.
That's due to the Tarmac's high stiffness in the bottom bracket and headtube.
Depending on your budget, you can get this excellent carbon frame with groupsets ranging from Shimano's 105 through to Sram's eTap.
We're big fans of Castelli kit. It's aero, cool and actually really comfy.
This sale is massive, so we've picked out a few things that caught our eye.
Castelli BodyPaint 3.3 Speed Suit
If you're looking to go as fast as possible, then you'll need a speedsuit.
This isn't something you'll want to use for the commute, it's more for hillclimbs and TTs. Despite the aero fit, this is surprisingly comfortable to wear during longer events.
Castelli Climber's 2.0 Jersey
For a more normal look, this climbers jersey makes a great option for any rider.
The fit is brilliant, with a lightweight fabric that stays soft after regular washing. The fit has a few aero touches, but it's not restrictive at all. It's the jersey that we use for training rides.
Castelli Velocissimo IV Bibshorts
The Velocissimo bibs were designed for all-day comfort.
They feature the KISS Air seat pad along with raw-cut leg ending with a silicone horizontal gripper.
Castelli Aero Speed Socks
We've seen a fair few pairs of these socks popping up in the local races.
How much difference do they make? We're not sure, but they look pretty cool at least!
Castelli Free Aero Socks
Nothing seems glamorous about a standard pair of socks, but these keep our feet cool and last really well.
The material is stretchy but doesn't make our feet sweat. A 9" cuff length is about perfect in our opinion. Not too long, but not short either.
Pro Bike Kit Clothing Sale
PBK have a great range of cycling kit from brands such as Castelli, Ale, Sportful and more!
The code that you need is CLOTH15 and it works when you go to the checkout.
The max discount is £25, but that's still enough to get you a whole chunk of cash off some bibs and a jersey.
It may be the middle of summer, but we'd be looking at the jackets section to pick up a bargain raincoat. It will come in handy, sooner rather than later!
Elite Direto Direct Drive Smart Turbo
This direct drive turbo trainer is compatible with apps like Zwift for an immersive turbo experience.
The days of heading into the cold garage for a mind-numbing workout on the turbo are gone.
These days, apps like Zwift make the turbo a very attractive option through a large part of the British winter.
The app can control a trainer like this one can replicate slopes of up to 14%. That that incline, it'll even cope with 1400w!
It is ANT+ FE-C & Bluetooth compliant so you can connect with desktop, TVs, phones and all your bike sensors.
The built-in power meter makes tracking training progress really easy and therefore makes your training more accurate and beneficial.
CycleOps Hammer Direct Drive Turbo
If last winter made you miss riding, this could be the year to take to the turbo.
This CycleOps Hammer is a direct drive turbo at a brilliant price.
Smart trainers offer a more immersive indoor training experience that simply clock watching.
The benefit to these systems is a third party app's ability to change the turbo's resistance. This allows it to mimic climbs and hard efforts.
The Hammer offers a smooth and realistic pedalling feel alongside quiet running.
It also folds away to a pretty compact shape, making it ideal for people in flats and smaller houses.
